1958

On April 17th 1958, another World's Fair organised by Belgium opened its doors in Brussels. Beyond their sometimes antagonistic views and interests, more than 43 countries showed their achievements, crafts and ambitions there. In his opening speech, Lucien Cooremans, Mayor of Brussels and President of the Executive Committee of the Expo plc., presented this World's Fair as a global assessment and an anticipation of things to come.

The State Archives in Belgium and the Brussels City Archives have joined forces to celebrate this outstanding event in the history of our country. The precious archives preserved by these two institutions, i.e. documents, photgraphs and plans, seasoned with collectors' scale models, film clips shot on the Avenues of Expo 58, and small or tall typical Fifties objects provide a global view of this event and form a fascinating exhibition.

The freshly renovated Atomium, the most prominent relict of its time and of Expo 58, gives us the honour to house the exhibition entitled Expo 58 Between Utopia and Reality within the framework of Brussels Hapiness, the label comprising all events around the fiftieth anniversary of this World's Fair.
